Lib Dem support for Wellington Hill Playing Fields

On Saturday 17th July 2001 Councillor Cheryl Ann and myself where in Wellington Hill Playing Fields where a fantastic get together took place to highlight the importance of this lovely green space for the local residence and a number of youth groups. We enjoyed a great afternoon and caught up with lots of friends and made some new ones. We where delighted with the turnout and the level of support shown. The general feeling around Bristol City Council’s Green Space initiative was one of support. The majority of people I spoke to supported the initiative especially when it utilises spaces currently under used and which can be put to better use. It is also understood that in today’s economic climate any funds created by the sale of underused land will be ring fenced by the current Lib Dem administration for developments and upgrades to other parks and green spaces. It was also appreciated that a process of consultation is important to engage with local residence and groups who use such space to gauge public opinion.

With this particular area I appreciate how important it is not just from a personal perspective, having used this area and the adjoining Horfield Common space to take my son for the last eight years but also from the strength of public opinion. From a practical point of view this is a space of land that enjoys relative security from the main roads and allows good vantage points for the youth groups, including the Scout, Cubs and Beavers etc. all of whose premises are directly adjacent to the park. Cheryl Ann and myself have given our support to retaining this space for the use of our community and will work with the residence during the period of consultation.
